Upcycling a Kitchen Unit

These last few weeks we have been decorating the kitchen, and redesigning the whole look of the room, ready for the move from a walled downstairs to an open plan downstairs.

We brought most of the kitchen from Ikea, and we love it, but there was one cupboard that we actually got of eBay.

It was such a large unit that we didn’t bother buying any other units to go on the wall.

Firstly because we didn’t think we would get anything else on the wall with this unit, and secondly because we thought that we could get most things into this unit.

It was a bargain on eBay, and we got a fantastic deal.

When it arrived it was sticky, and obviously had been lovingly used for a long time.

It was also blue.

Which wasn’t a colour that we wanted to keep.

Eventually I want most of our furniture to be a white base, and I wanted the same for this unit.

It was a mission to put up in the first place, and actually took three grown men to fix it. As it was so big, it wasn’t possible to paint it before it went on the wall, mainly due to its size.

So once it was in place I finally got started on the painting.

I used Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint to cover the unit. It took three coats of the paint, before I really liked the finished look.

Once this was dry, I covered the back of each of the shelves with a gorgeous wallpaper, that we fixed with a spray adhesive.

It was a different adhesive to what I have used in the past, and to be totally honest it has left a bit of a mark on the paper, which has infuriated me. I have been told that it doesn’t affect the look of the unit, but it does bother me. So it is very possible that I will be taking the paper out and redoing it in the future. But for now I am attempting to live with the paper that is already there, and believe everyone that tells me that it doesn’t show.

But apart from the issue with the paper, I adore this cabinet now.

I loved it anyway but now I have changed the look I adore it and it is one of my favourite pieces in the kitchen now.

It also stores a lot of stuff and is a perfect cupboard for our glasses, and crockery.

It is a massive statement piece, and one that we will all love for many years to come, and is our bargain piece of the kitchen which is always a bonus.
