What The Internet Does For Our Family
Where would we be without any internet?
It is something that I think about a lot, our lives are very different from when Mr L and I grew up and we look at what Baba is learning and what our nieces and nephews learn and do and it is very different to how we grew up.
The internet is around us all the time now, and it is something we use everyday in our house. We had internet when I was growing up, it was a slow dial-up internet, the one that you had to wait for it to connect and was by no means instant and fast like all the broadband’s that are available now.
We rely on it, I suppose, it has enabled me to be a work at home mum. Through the internet I have built up my own business that I run alongside the children, I can work the hours that suit our family and do all my marketing online. If we didn’t have the internet I would have had to go back to my previous job of working in care homes and Mr L and I would be tackling childcare everyday and would be paying out for childminders, and I would be back working nights. However having the ability to build my business up online has meant that we don’t have to do that. We had another option at the time of having Baba and we decided to take it and for us it has worked out great.
I had five years at home with Baba before he went to school and I intend to do the same with Boo, I have the work flexibility of the internet never shutting down and I can work freely in the evenings when they are sleeping! Giving me the one to one time with them and the time to work.
If we didn’t have the internet we wouldn’t have got the support that we have had over the years. Recently with having Boo, who is not an easy baby with his colic and reflux we have both been using the internet a lot in different ways. Getting support and advice from other mum’s who have gone through this via social media and also researching both conditions to find out what is the best way to deal with both of them for Boo. I am often on the internet in the middle of the night reading pieces of research or other blogs of Mum’s who have dealt with these conditions in the past.
Whereas the OH is on the internet listening to audio books, or catching up with TV while he is dealing with Boo in the middle of the night. If we didn’t have the internet at the moment we would have much harder evenings trying to stay awake while dealing with Boo and him being awake throughout the night.
Baba has been using the internet from the moment he could use a computer, and he regularly uses Skype to talk to his cousins, as that is much more exciting than just talking on the phone as he can do dances and see them the whole time. He loves to go onto children’s websites, play games and continue his learning. His favourite thing is to find out about animals on the internet, he loves researching them and having us read out facts to him about different animals. He soaks up all the information and is learning more and more about how to use the internet while being at school, and I am sure he will soon be better than us at this.
If we didn’t have the internet our lives would be different.
I would lead a very secluded life, one where I don’t get to speak to my friends immediately, and one that I couldn’t ask for help instantly. Our whole life and family dynamics would be very different as we would be out of the house working, and a childminder would probably be the main provider for our children, rather than me. We wouldn’t be able to watch our programmes when we want to, it would have to be when they are on. Baba wouldn’t be constantly learning, as if we don’t know the answer a quick look online means that we can generally find it, and Mr L wouldn’t have books in his life, even if they are audio, they are still books.
We use the internet a lot, but I think it has been good for our family, with my business and being at home for the children, but what does the internet do for your family? Would life be different without it?
