So We Have Been, Now We Are Waiting…

So this morning we went off to the hospital were Baba is having his eye operations for his pre-op. To say I was nervous was an understatement. I wrote about all my nerves earlier today.

Today didn’t start well with the fact that my parents couldn’t come with me as my mum had a bug and I didn’t think dad should come in case he had it too. So from going with a little support I was now going on my own.

I shouldn’t have worried. The ward was easy-ish to find. It was a little difficult but all the staff were very helpful and directed me in the right place so it wasn’t too difficult.

Once we were one the ward, Baba was happy they had fish in a tank as soon as you walked in. That kept him happy as soon as we walked in. He loved the ward and loved the playroom as it had lots of cars and garages and a lot of airplanes in, what more could a child want.

We saw a lovely nurse, who asked us a few questions. She showed Baba which room he would be in, explained that he had his own flat-screen TV to watch if he wanted. She asked him if he wanted a bed or cot, he replied with a bed! Thankfully! And explained that he would be coming there next week, which he was fine with. He told her that Daddy was coming so she told him that he had to show Daddy where to go and be the big boy for the day, I liked that. She was very good with him I was really impressed.

She admitted that she didn’t know too much about the operation that he is having, it will take about 30 minutes on each eye, not including the amount of time he will take to come round from the anesthetic. She did say that the surgeon will just tell us the time the operation will take not the coming round time. She explained that he will have the maximum dose of anesthetic because his muscles around his eyes need to be over 100% relaxed for the operation to be easier. That was all the information that she knew, but she said we would get told more on the day when we have to sign the consent form.

We were told what happens on the day, we can both go in. But only one of us can take him to the operating room, as there is not enough room. He will be put asleep on whoever takes him in, and she said they will probably use the face mask, for a number of reasons. Firstly he has got really chubby hands and to find a vein would be hard, and secondly because he has an inhaler he is used to something over his face so he will be calmer with it! We shall see!

We then got a walk round of the ward, saw the toilets, the parenting room and the play room. She explained where the Costa Cafe was and the shop and explained to Baba that he had to bring some pj’s he told her he would bring two pairs! He was happy, he liked her and she is on for his operation, which is great!

He isn’t allowed to go home until he has come round fully, has eaten something and has had a wee. I asked what happened if he was sick and she said that we would be staying until he stopped being sick. But she thinks that if there are no problems we should be out early afternoon next week.

I am a lot happier, I think the unknown was the thing that was bugging me. I can now visualise where we are going and what is happening when I think about it. Which makes me happier. We know that he is going to be first, that makes me 100% happier as I was really concerned that he couldn’t have anything from 6.3oam, completely NIL by mouth. I was trying to work out how I was going to keep him happy till his operation time. I am now hoping that that wont be too long away and that we shouldn’t have a massive weight.

I think the biggest thing that has helped me feel better is the fact that Baba liked it in there. He was at ease and was happy in there that makes a big difference. He is actually excited about going to hospital with Daddy. I don’t want to change that, but feel very mean letting him carry on thinking that. Although if it means he is going to go in happy maybe I should just let him carry on with that thought. It means it is a happy thing and not a sad thing! That is good right?

So we are ready now, lets roll on next week and get this thing over and done with hey!

    • It was such a nice children’s ward, much better than our local hospital so glad I chose out of county again. I did for having Baba and would so do it again as well. xx

  • I think that it is really reassuring that you were able to visit. It isnt pleasent, Mini had an op at 2 weeks old, but I hope all will be well. MadDad had an eye op as a child too

    • I remembering you saying about MadDad having an op. It has really helped it is just the visualising where I am taking him, and I think the whole taking Daddy for the first time was a great thing for the nurse to say. Encouraging Baba to be brave for Daddy as he will latch on to that I was really impressed with her, and am glad she is on next week. It isn’t nice but it helps if you like the people that are looking after them, I think that was a thing that was bothering me I didn’t want him to have someone horrible taking over his care. So I am pleased that he liked her and the play specialist. xx
