Hospital Visit Number 3

Yesterday Baba and I went back to the hospital for his third visit in as many months. For you regular readers you will know that he had his eyes operated on a month ago. So we had to go back for his post op check up yesterday.

It was a nightmare the actual check up was fine, but the rest of it was a pain in the backside to be honest.

We got there being told that he was going to the children’s outpatients ward, Baba only being two you would think that wouldn’t you! They had no knowledge of our appointment. The silly surgeon, who I have to say did a fantastic job on Baba’s eyes had booked us into the adult eye department, at the other end of the hospital.

We had no pushchair so Baba bless him had to walk from one end of the hospital to the other and to be fair he was an absolute star.

When we finally got to the adult eye department about 15 minutes late for our appointment now, we got told that they were certain we should be in the children’s outpatients. When I told them that they had sent us to them we got told that they had probably made a mistake.

By this point I was beginning to get a little angry! They finally found us in the list so sent us through to the waiting room.

A totally bare waiting room, with a couple of OK magazines and the like, and lots of rows of chairs and lots and lots of people. When I looked at the board Baba’s doctor had an hour waiting time AT LEAST!

I was filled with dread, I had brought nothing for Baba as we were told we were going to the children’s outpatients and had been in there on the day of his operation, it was full of toys so I didn’t think we would need anything. So I did want any slightly annoyed parent would do at this point, I really just let him do what he wanted.

We went to the back of the waiting room, where there was one very elderly lady sitting and the rest of the row was completely free. Baba just ran up and down the chairs climbing on them all and banging the wall. The elderly lady thought he was fab and he thought she was hilarious so I just let him carry on. We did this for 40 minutes. Now I am sure we probably annoyed some people. But I was not going to stress him out. I would rather him making fun noises than crying and screaming as I have made him sit still.

When we finally got in there as I said before the surgeon did a fantastic job with Baba’s eyes you could see it worked straight away but good god he needs some serious personal skills. He said two words to me voluntarily in the consultations, “they’re fine!”

I had to literally pull more words out of him, it was like pulling teeth, would it be a problem in the future? Could Baba now swim? Will it happen to any of our other children? No, yes and not sure where his precise answers!

I left feeling elated that we were now being discharged, (I had to ask that to check) but also feeling that I had just had the worst conversation in the world ever!

So that’s it we are done. Baba’s eyes are fantastic they are all corrected and we are discharged!
