Toilet Training!

I read a post the other day over at Diary Of A First Child about potty training and it made me really think. I left a comment on the post saying that Baba was doing all of the things on the list and does that mean that we should start?

We haven’t yet started but it is something that we have been looking into I have to say. He does pull of his pull ups at home when he has had a wee or poo he has been doing this for a little while. However these past few days he has just started to pull his pull up off, and go and get the potty sit on it and do a wee. It does just seem to be one offs. We have then not bothered to put his nappy back on and then he proceeds to just do a wee on the floor. So I am not sure.

He loves his pants, and says that he wants to wear them often, and does manage to almost get them on. However over his pants, if you try to get them on without his pants, he doesn’t want to know. He just likes them over the pull ups instead.

I think that he is almost ready but am not if he 100%. If I am honest I am dreading toilet training. I am not that bothered, but Mr L gets very stressed about accidents. It is something that he doesn’t deal with well and I am dreading going down this route with him. As I think he is going to be the biggest stress of it all. So may be I am trying to subconsciously trying to put it off for as long as possible. I am not sure.

Do you have any tips for toilet training? I have heard boys are best to leave as long as possible? What age is that? I would love some advice and tips on this thanks.

  • To be honest it sounds like you are approaching it the right way. I know the books say “don’t have them in pull-ups cos it’s confusing” but I think that’s twoddle. The little one quite happily wore pull-ups since she was at least 1 and pulled them up and down to use the potty. In fact, when we first put her in knickers that confused her and we ended up with accidents. With a nappy, no accidents and perfect potty usage. I suggest letting him stay in what’s comfortable, have the potties around the house, give him lots of praise every time he uses them but don’t worry about getting rid of the nappies until you are comfortable

    • Baba seems to be fine with his pull ups as well, I have read that too and thought the same as you that it was working fine for us! xx

  • Toilet training Kidder is a nightmare. He doesn’t want to do it and a year after me first introducing a potty, he has just (for about the last two months) started sitting on one without a nappy on. He doesn’t do anything on it though.

He also hates fuss, so if he sits on it and you clap and praise him he gets really upset about it. It’s hard to reinforce what he’s doing.

Mr L needs to chill his beans with the accident thing. I can only see that making Baba worse – can you imagine, every time he has an accident Mr L yelling or shouting or whatever he does. Even if it’s not directly at Baba, he’ll soon catch on and it’ll have an adverse affect on him.

I was for making Kidder use the potty, but he was screaming etc. and I was told by so many people to just leave him until he wants to do it. Problem is, he still doesn’t want to, really.

I don’t think it’s a matter of it being better to leave them as long as possible, I just think that boys don’t generally take to it as early as girls and therefore it’s best to leave them until they’re ready to do it.

Like Baba, he has all of the signs suggesting that he’s ready to start, apart from that he just isn’t. He doesn’t want to.

You have to start when they’re ready. I wouldn’t put it off because of Mr L. Do what’s right for Baba x

    • Totally agree with everything that you have said, you see Baba is fab at taking his nappy off and going on the potty, but just once. Once he has done it the first time he doesn’t want to do it again and just wants to pee round the house. It is very strange!

Mr L is another difficulty that is for sure, he doesn’t shout but like you said he just keeps nagging almost why he hasn’t been on the potty, which Baba does not need.

I think I am just going to keep doing what we are at the moment and see how he gets on with it all. xx

  • I’ve been quite lucky with Freyja, and I agree – Girls definitely take to it better than boys. I bought her a potty last week for her to get used to, because she was showing signs. I didn’t expect her to use it, but she did, as soon as she saw it. Since then, she’s been running around nappy-less in the house and hasn’t had any accidents, going to the potty every time.

All I’d say is to reinforce what Becca and you have said. Don’t push them into things, else it’ll take a lot longer than it would usually. My mum’s a health visitor, and advised me to just let Freyja do it and not push her into things. And she did.

Also, Mr L sounds exactly like my hub. He’s so anal when it comes to accidents and all I can say to him is CHILL! x

    • Ah isn’t she a clever girl I am just going to go with the flow with Baba and see where we get too really. See what happens, and try to get through to Mr L that it is not the end of the world if there is pee on the carpet! xx
