Toilet Training Some Questions?
So we have started training Baba, I think he has wanted to be trained for a while but I have actually been putting it off, firstly because of the operation and secondly it is a big thing and we are always so busy! But I wrote a post about it a while ago stating that I was dreading toilet training and I have been really it is something that does scare me. But I know something that needs to be done.
In the last couple of weeks, Baba has told us when he has done something in his nappy, he has been pulling them off. He has asked for the potty and toilet at our house, and at his Nannies and I have noticed that his nappies have been dryer for longer periods. He also has a clear understanding of the question “do you need a wee/poo?” He is never wrong with his response so knows what he is feeling. All good signs!
So as it is the holidays and I have not got as much childcare as no school, and mum has my sisters children we decided that it was the perfect time to give potty training a go. It was going to be Baba and me a lot of the time at home so we thought we could have a good few chilled days at home trying it out.
We brought some stickers and a big roll of paper to hang on the lounge door and I explained on Thursday the first day that he would get a sticker every time he used the potty. This was quickly latched onto and Baba loves this, he gets very excited about the stickers and when Mr L comes home he runs over to show him how many stickers he has got. We count them throughout the day and they are really keeping him enthusiastic about the whole process.
I have to say in two days he has 100% impressed me we have had over 30 successes on the potty with both wees and poos and only 4 accidents. He is being a real star. He is so happy with himself and so are Mr L and I.
There are a few things I am confused about to be honest, at the moment he has just been running around our house half naked as he refuses to wear pants. Is that normal? I have no clue whether it is and how to get around it to be honest, he seems to not want them at all. Which is fine in the house but what about when we are out?
The second thing I am confused about is that he doesn’t ask. Mainly because the potty is just in the lounge sitting there but will he actually ask when we are out? How do you make them realise this?
I think I am more confused by all of this than Baba is, so I am hoping that some off you other mummies out there are going to be able to help me. Thanks!

I’m doing the same with my eldest. He’s 3 but has had no interest up til now… We’ve just put him him pants as that was what was recommended. He chose the pants himself at the shop so has got some Toy Story ones and some Monster ones and he likes them and likes wearing them. He’s not asked to go on the potty, so a note I took from my friend was to keep asking him if he wants to go, and I set an alarm so i I forget bit reminds me to ask him at least every 15 mins. We have had some accidents, but mostly on the potty so quite optimistic so far! We aren’t using stickers as he’s not bothered about them, but using maltesers – one for a wee on the potty, two for a poo and that is working well! Good luck, I know it’s so difficult – we haven’t taken him out yet!!
I think that is the thing just finding what they like isn’t it, Baba loves stickers so was the way to go with him xx
Hi! Well done Baba!!
I think it just all falls into place to be honest. We were exactly the same. We trained over the summer holidays last year so my daughter just ran around with no clothes on.
I was really worried about this and we barely left the house for 2 weeks. But it all sorted itself out.
Try buying him some really cool pants in his favourite character – let him choose them then he’ll be proud and pleased to wear them.
Good luck. Don’t sweat it too much. It will all work out ok. xx
Thank you we are getting there slowly but surely xx
I found that pants are optional in the early day. I bought trainer pants for when we went out. We also had the potty in the lounge so she went when she needed. She always asked when we were out but I suggest two things as well as the trainer pants:
1. Travel Carry potty
2. Travel toddler toilet seat to stop them falling in on the grown up toilets!
He will eventually be ok with pants but you might find if you put them on now he has more accidents. For some reason it confuses them
Meanwhile well done baba!
Thank you that is great advice will take that all on board xx
