The Gallery – A Memory
I used to work in an Autistic school!
I worked in one classroom for a year or so, and the children in that class could bite. One of the children was going through a rough patch, he would get very distressed. He would hurt himself and try and hurt whoever was in his way as well.
One day it all kicked off, and I was working with him one on one at the time. I could see that he was getting stressed, and nothing was calming him down. He lunged from his chair and went to hit himself I put my leg out to protect his head, and this was the bite that I received!
Yes really it was a bite from a little boy, if I am right he was about 8/9 years old at the time.
I was in agony. I remember the next couple of hours, my leg just felt worse and worse. By the end of the day I could not walk, driving home was difficult.
However the next day was agony. I had to call in sick, I could barely move my leg. I went to the doctor and was asked whether I had been bitten by a HORSE! When I told the doctor what had happened, they just looked at me. The bite had torn the muscles in my leg. I was in agony for weeks, and even now 5 years on I still get a lot of pain in my leg.
This is a memory that I will always have of a certain lad, and my time of teaching him.

Yes it was a bit still is five years on. It was nothing I could have expected a child to do to an adult! xx

Ow – that’s some bite! You poor thing – not a memory you cherish I would imagine!
No I don’t like the bite at all, but it means I will never forget the little guy and that I cherish as I loved working with him xx

Blimey. I’m a teacher and have worked in some difficult places, but I’ve never had any wounds. Sometimes the most difficult situations end up being the most rewarding though, don’t they?
Yes that is so true! It was the most rewarding job I had but the hardest as well and I have some painful and some cherished memories from that job xx
Wow – What a bite, I have seen this regulary as my little boy is special and goes to a special nursery, you must have been a very good teacher though as you knew to protect him in his time of need. I am sure the photo brings happy and sad emotions, thanks so much for sharing the story.

Of course you have to look after yourself but sometimes you have to protect them more! I loved the job and would go back working with them again someday however I knew that I couldn’t do it while bringing up young children. It was a very hard job to walk away from and forget about and I didn’t want to be doing that with young children.

I’m glad you can look back on this positively though. It sounds like you were doing very important work.
Yeah I have needed it in the past, I have lots of scars that are constant reminders of my work there, but all with fondness I have to say xx
