Letter To Our Four Year Old

Last week you turned four!

It seems to have gone so fast, it literally only seems like yesterday that we were sitting in the maternity unit, being induced again and again as you didn’t want to come, then finally having this tiny teeny 5 lb 12 ounce baby in our hands.

In the four years you have been here, you have made our hearts swell with pride, made them stop with worry, made us cry with laughter, frustration and fear.

In the last year you have grown from a little toddler to a proper little boy.

You have been our saviour this year, and over night you grew up, the day your sister died. To be honest that day you became our parents at the tender age of three. I hope that you will never understand 100% because I hope you never have to experience this, but you were the reason you Daddy and I kept going. Many times, you made us laugh when we really could have curled up and died inside, even on your sisters funeral you made the day fun, by just being so proud and so excited about Rhianna getting her balloons.

You have always seen the good things, and you have made both of us see the good things as well. And we will always owe that to you. You have been so mature for a three-year old now four-year old, and have asked questions when you didn’t understand, and they really haven’t been the easiest questions but you have asked them. You needed the answers and you didn’t care if it upset people, but in a way it was good to actually be asked the questions that no one else would dare ask, at least we knew you were working it out in your own head.

This year hasn’t just been about your sister it has also been about you growing, over the last few months you have become this amazing intelligent thoughtful soul.

One that never stops learning, and one that is overtaking most of us in areas. Your thirst for knowledge is amazing and you are looking for answers every minute of the day.

You are fascinated with science, and understanding how things work.

You are our own personal little wildlife specialist, and will spend hours searching for bugs, telling us what they are, where they are from and what they eat. If you don’t know you ask us the questions and we have to go and find the answers if we don’t know. You love the likes of Spiderman etc but would quite happily sit and spend and afternoon watching Blue Planet, or your all time favourite Deadly 60. Your love for animals is enormous, including all of ours. I would never have said that we would own a dog, lizard, rabbit, two guinea pigs, hamster and a giant snail by the age that you were four. But you love them all individually and because you are so good with them we can never seem to say no.

You are also turning into a child who loves a bit of technology. You can find you sitting and watching cartoons and toy reviews on You Tube, you know how to play your games and are easily going to over take your Daddies and my skill when it comes to computers very quickly.

But you wont spend all day every day in doors, you love to be exploring outside, understanding the bugs, planting your vegetables with Nanny and Pops, and finding your snails and painting on the patio with your other Nanny.

You are witty, determined and totally independent in your views and ideas, and to be honest god help anyone that tries to stop you from doing something you want to do. You are strong-minded and I don’t think you will ever be a sheep follower which I am really proud about. You will make your mind up and you will follow it I am 100% certain. You have very strong ideas they may not always be right, but you will keep going and going until they are right and then you will be so very proud that you have managed it all on your own.

Your humour is fantastic and you can seriously be the complete clown in the room, you can make a series of generations laugh from Great Nanny right down to your tiny little cousin and all the people in between. And you love every moment of it, you are confident not shy at all, have a great amount of friends and seem to gel with anyone that meets you. You love adult company and children your age, younger or older. You seem to reach out to everyone and everyone seems to love you.

You have grown into a fantastic little boy, you are no longer a toddler and we can no longer get away with it.

Every day you make us proud, some days you do something amazing, others you are just you, and that is all that you really need to be. You are an amazing little man, and you stay the way that you are and you will go far in life.

We are very proud of you and can not ask for any more from you, so to our four-year old we look forward to how you grow in the next year as these last four years you have done nothing but make our hearts swell and we can not wait for more of that!

Love Mummy and Daddy x

  • What a beautiful post! I feel like I know your little boy now and I have a tear in my eye reading it as my little boy is on the cusp of turning four as well, and same as you, I can’t believe he is nearly 4 already. Sounds like you have an awful lot to be proud of, he sounds totally adorable!

    • Thank you he is totally adorable and we are so proud of him he has dealt with so many things this year and been a complete star xx

  • What a lovely post. Sounds like you have much to be proud of with your little boy. I’m sure he feels very loved and will have no doubt that he was every bit as much a priority as your need to remember, grieve and do work in Rhianna’s name. I hope your son had a wonderful birthday :)x
