Getting Ready

Baba has his operation two weeks today for his eyes. He has a condition called Trichiasis which is where his eyelashes grow into his eyes. He has as severe case, this is classed as five eyelashes or more, he has both of his bottom row of lashes growing in.

We went to see the consultant in December and he took one look at Baba just sitting on my lap and told me that he needed an operation and asked why we had waited so long. To say that I was a little annoyed was an understatement as everyone, except our own doctor at the surgery had been telling us to wait and that they would grow out! However that is a whole other post talking about my doctors surgery!

So we have been waiting for confirmation since December and it has come through for the 8th of March with his pre operation being next week on the 1st of March. We still have no clue about the operation, we know that he is a day surgery case and that we have to be there for 7.30am on the day. But as for the actual operation we know a little I am not going to go into detail here, it isn’t the nicest of things. But that is what the pre operation is for, to ask all these questions and as we have a four hour pre operation appointment I think I should have time to ask a few!

However we have to have a healthy Baba for the operation, which is not so easy especially as both Mr L and I now think we have tonsillitis! We are all of to the doctors today, to check that Baba is OK, which we got told to do last week as he has his operation they said to go back when his antibiotics have finished and we are going because we think we need antibiotics. I just hope that we are all OK. It is horrible when everyone is poorly, especially when you have that Baba can not be ill hanging over your head!

So apart from us being poorly hoping that we all get better soon, we shall be getting up at 5am on the 8th getting ready for the journey, Baba is only allowed water until 6.30am and then he is nil by mouth and then we will be waiting. Waiting to be called for the operation.

I am dreading every aspect of it, but am so pleased that he is finally going to get it sorted. In the last few weeks they have really started to annoy him and he has been pulling at his lashes saying they are hurting him, so I think it is time that he had them done.

Have any of you ever had anything like this in your children? We would love some advice about the condition, children and operations anything to be honest. We are completely blagging this at the moment!

    • Thank you so much so do I am dreading it in the sense of letting my baby go down for an operation, but at the same time pleased that he is getting what he needs! xx

  • Bless him, poor little soul. Is he having a general anaesthetic? My little boy had to have a general at the age of about 2 to remove some sponge from his nose (don’t ask!). He was actually brilliant, a bit grumpy cos he was hungry, but generally fine. I made the mistake of not eating either as I thought it wasn’t fair on him to eat in front of him. Unfortunately, we had to wait until about 11 for the op, by which time I was about ready to pass out, both from hunger & emotionally. So top tip: make sure you eat something yourself, so you can at least function if there’s a long wait.
Actually having the general was quite traumatic (again, only for me, my son took it all in his stride with no problem)- i had to hold him while they injected him, then about 10 seconds later he went complely limp. They’d warned me that was going to happen but it was still a very emotional moment, also handing him over too. Like I said tho, the lack of food really didn’t help in that respect!
Ultimately, it was over before I’d even had a chance to grab a coffee, a lovely parent of another kid in there came and found me as soon as he’d come out. I was back for when he woke up. Then it was waiting for him to have a drink and a biscuit (big smiles when they came out, from both of us!) and we were free to go.
Just remember, your baba will be in very safe hands, and it will all be over before you know it.
Oh- do remember to take some entertainment for him in case it is a long wait. Nothing is worse than a bored & hungry little person!!
    Good luck x
