A Weekend In Wales

Last week was a total right off, we were all ill.

It started the week before when Boo and I got poorly on the Friday and had a really bad virus. As the weekend went on, both of us got worse and by Monday I couldn’t really do anything and had spent all weekend in bed. I got a doctors appointment and had flu and bronchitis and was given some antibiotics, Boo had a virus and so did Mr L, and BB had a very sore throat and was feeling rough, but generally managed to go on.

But we were really out of action.

I spent most of the week in bed, and Boo didn’t get back to school until Thursday. As he was still bad with his temperature and coughing.

We were all feeling a bit better by the end of the week, but we were fed up.

Fed up of being in the house, and fed up of being ill.

So we decided as it was the beginning of half term to have a little break and booked a couple of nights in a Travelodge and headed to Wales for the weekend.

Wales is one of Mr L’s favourite places and we have taken BB before but have never taken Boo, even though we have talked about it a few times, we haven’t actually got him there yet.

We stayed in Carmarthen one of the places that Mr L really likes and spent the first day having a little look around the main town of Carmarthen, and then we headed over to Kidwelly Castle, as both the boys love a castle.

They love looking inside castles, reading about how they were used when they were in their prime, and having a good nose at what is left of them now.

Both of them loved the fact that you could go right down into the dungeons, and could climb up to the top of the towers. Although Mr L was the only that actually managed the full climb, as it was very narrow and very steep!

We all managed to walk around the top of the castle, and this one at Kidwelly really still had a lot of the castle standing and even had a little of the wall left down the street from the walled community that used to live around the castle. Both the boys found this interesting and really enjoyed the visit, and Boo got to buy a sword in the shop, which is always a bonus in his eyes!

On Sunday as we were heading home we drove a bit of the way back before stopping at Barry Island, being a huge Gavin and Stacey fan, it is somewhere I have wanted to go for a while and somewhere that Mr L has avoided as I know he was dreading it, and thought it was going to be hell, when we drove in we were both a bit weary as one side just looks like factories, but then you get to see the beach.

And the factories don’t matter, and the kids were in heaven as all along the front there are arcades, and cheap little beach shops and fish and chips, the best I have had to be honest.

But then there is the walk way along this cliff I suppose, that you can walk along.

And when you start to walk along it and look back…

You get to really see the beauty that is Barry Island.

But then realise there is another bay the other side of this walk way.

One that looks a lot quieter and less touristy than the other side, and actually you are really in one of the most beautiful places.

And the best thing was knowing that we had found something new and that there is still so much to explore, around this part of Wales, so much so that we are already planning our next visit, as the boys absolutely loved this trip, and love Wales and want to see so much more of it already.

I think it will be a place we visit a lot more in the future.

And it really was a perfect place to start to our half term and a great way to get over all being so ill.

A very needed break and one we will repeat soon.
