Go to sleep with them at night

If only we could walk along you everyday

If only we could open the back gate and you be there

If only just taking one towel was enough

If only we knew your temperament from our house window.

If only you weren’t that drive away

If only we didn’t have to pack up everything to be disappointed

If only we knew what you would be like when we arrived

If only we knew you were deserted, or full before we headed off.

If only we could watch you from the warmth inside our house

If only we could see you thrashing and shouting

If only we could watch you getting angry and calm

If only you were right here, rather than all that way over there!
