Ending 2013 With Illness

December was a whirlwind, Boo wasn’t due until the 18th of December, so we thought that we could be spending the most of December pregnant, (although I had no intention of that happening) but as he decided himself to arrive early, it meant that the madness started on the 3rd instead.

I had spent pretty much everyday since September praying that Baba didn’t get something highly contagious with starting school, like chicken pox or something and we had done really well. He had managed to miss most things, even though he had been put in with lots of new people, and neither of us had become too ill.

I had got a chest infection, but even Baba had managed to escape this that is until I went into labour.

My waters broke at 4.45am on Tuesday and by 6am Mr L and I decided that we had better get into hospital. But we wanted to tell Baba where we were going first, as we didn’t want him to wake up with Nanny and Grandad and not know where we were.

Mr L woke him up and instantly we knew that he was ill. Baba is possibly asthmatic, and he suffers with chesty things, and with croup a lot. He woke up and you could tell he was ill, he sounded awful and to be honest he looked awful. My parents arrived and had gone from getting Baba ready for school to having to take Baba to the doctors as he was poorly.

We guessed that he had probably got my chest infection, and we guessed right, my parents took him to the doctors and they said he had a chest infection and to keep him off school for the next few days until he got better. So it was all going on in our house.

Boo and I were kept in hospital, and Baba was at home with my parents poorly, waiting for Daddy to come home, who quite frankly felt very torn. He wanted to be with all of us and there was no way that was possible on that first day.

Boo and I came home the next day and Baba was still poorly and it took him the whole week to get over it, the infection seemed to hit him hard, but it never seemed to completely go away. He had an underlying cold for a long time and it remained until the end of term.

It seemed to get worse and we were debating whether he was going to make his first school nativity as he seemed to have an awful cough that really wasn’t going away at all. Mr L and I decided that we would get him through the play and then if he was too poorly for the last two days of school he was too poorly.

He coughed through most of his play but he managed it, and even though each evening he looked very ill, and he was coughing he was determined to finish his last two days of school.

The day before he finished he came out of school and looked ill, he didn’t want anything to eat and said that his mouth was hurting. Within about 15 minutes he started screaming that his ears were hurting and he was crying in pain, we managed to get him a walk in appointment at the doctors and we both sat there for half an hour with him screaming the doctor’s surgery down. When we finally got seen he had a raging ear infection and was given antibiotics to get on top of it.

It seemed to work and he seemed to be getting better, and then this cold came back, his cough returned and he just seemed full of it, and then Boo started to be full of cold. He became snuffly and was struggling to feed as he was full of it. They both struggled through Christmas and the Monday after Christmas they were both in the doctors as both had conjunctivitis, and both were full of colds and we didn’t want either to get it on their chest, Baba because he had just got over a chest infection and Boo as he wasn’t able to take anything at just 3 weeks old.

We were doing everything we possibly could for him, we had saline drops, had raised his bed and were making sure he was out of the cold and was sat up when we were feeding him. But we wanted to be sure that nothing was going on his chest.

Luckily both of them were fine, their chests were clear, it was just their eyes that were gunky and they were both full of it but only with common colds.

So we spent the rest of the holidays resting up and trying to get them both completely clear of their germs before restarting the term and having to go out every day. Baba seemed to get over his quickly, Boo is nearly there, he is no longer snuffly all day, it just seems to be the evenings that he suffers, but he is much better than he was and it is no longer affecting his feeding like it was at the beginning. So at least they are both on the road to recovery, well at least until the next round off illness happens.
